There are more than one artist with the name Tar.

1. The precursor to Tar was a hardcore punk outfit called Blatant Dissent, which formed in DeKalb, Illinois where singer/guitarist John Mohr and drummer Mike Greenlees were attending Northern Illinois University. Tar released albums on the Amphetamine Reptile and Touch and Go Records labels before disbanding in 1995. During its career, the band released a total of four singles, four albums, two mini albums, and contributed songs to six compilations and split singles. Members of the band included original bassist Tim Mescher (only until 1991 and who also played for Shorty), bassist Tom Zaluckyj and guitarist Mark Zablocki, as well as Greenlees and Mohr. Zaluckyj and Mohr played unique guitars, crafted of aluminum. The band toured nationally and internationally with bands such as Jawbox, Arcwelder, and the Jesus Lizard. In 1994 the band made the decision to call it quits after releasing one final album. Over and Out was written and recorded over a period of a year and a half, produced by the band and engineered by Steve Albini and Bob Weston, and released in 1995.

2. TAR is a sludge metal band from Helsinki, Finland.

Building Taj Mahal into QVC is probably my favorite noise rock song ever.

Building Taj Mahal into QVC is probably my favorite song transition ever. I traveled America - once with family and once with a friend - listening to Over and Out over and over again. I could never get anyone to appreciate it like I do, but I have a profound love for that album. I believe them, along with Steve Albini, made the perfect teenage confusion, angsty, nihilistic album. I don't ever need to listen to another album with a similar message because it nailed it. Perfect sound, perfect production, and absolutely no recognition for it. Youtube took down my videos for the album because I was violating copyright laws, even when I personally asked Tar if I could put their music up and they said "Yeah man, we'd do it if we knew how to work computers".

This band never got the real plaudits it deserved as I am sure a lot who enjoy this band would agree, a fantastic band that were consistent throughout their career, just a pity they decided to part ways in the mid 90s.
