Ann Arbor, Detroit MI, United States (1997 – present)

Taproot are an American / band. Hailing from Ann Arbor, Michigan, Taproot formed in late 1997, and has toured with Deftones, Sevendust, Incubus, and Korn. Taproot’s album “Blue Sky Research” was released on 16 August 2005. Their song “Calling” was the official theme song of WWE’s Unforgiven pay-per-view event in September 2005. The second single from the album, “Birthday,” received minimal radio airtime on the East Coast.

In 1997, Taproot sent their demo to Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst. Impressed with their material, he offered to get them a recording contract through Interscope Records. However, after extended negotiations, Taproot looked elsewhere, where they finally landed a lucrative record deal with Atlantic Records. Durst heavily cursed the band on vocalist Stephen Richards’ answering machine. He also put some blame on System of a Down, who assisted Taproot in securing the Atlantic deal. In retaliation, Durst also kicked System of a Down off the 1999 Family Values Tour, replacing them with Staind. Taproot later went on to independently release three albums: …Something More Than Nothing (1998), Mentobe (1998) and Upon Us (1999).

The band released their debut album Gift on June 27, 2000. With the album’s lead single “Again & Again” gaining heavy exposure through MTV2, the band’s mainstream rise gained momentum. With the help of Ozzy Osbourne’s son Jack, Taproot landed a spot on the second stage of the 2000 and 2001 Ozzfest tour.

His vocals vary. demos and Gift are really rough because of his vocal styles there, but Plead the Fifth and Blue-Sky Research are great vocally, with some highlights on Welcome. He always seems to fall back on Gift stuff live though, not sure why that is...maybe if they re-recorded that album with the vocals mentioned on Blue-Sky Research alongside the screams, the baritone guitar riffs on that album rock.

I think too that Stephen doesn't have best voice, but he's good screamer in my opinion, I'm not metalhead or big fan of metalcore... things, but they should go this way, or something more like "Our Long Road Home" pretty solid album.

Not sure what changed, but they jut forgot how to write a memorable song ~85% of the time after Blue Sky Research. prefer the newer vocals, prefer the older instrumentation. Means Blue Sky Research will always be their best album to me likely.

Taproot are still one if the best bands around. Always underrated & under appreciated. I never really thought of them as by metal especially after Gift but if u have to class them as that, then they are one of the most dynamic bands of that genre. So insanely good. So Eager is my fave song. The newer albums are Definately ones that rake multiple listens to appreciate but so worth it. Plead The Fifth is crazy good.

That Hawkins synthesizer (?) is really annoying in The Episodes, but can live with that in "No Surrender" 'cuz it's too awesome to forget about that track thanks to damn 30 sec creppy voice.
