Biography

She began her professional career in 1955, participating in the vaudeville Gente de bem e champanhota at the Follies Theatre in Rio de Janeiro. Also that year she recorded a 78 rpm on the Odeon label containing Amendoim torradinho (Henrique Beltrão) and Desejo (Garoto, José Vasconcelos and Luiz Cláudio). She then released another 78 rpm with Menina (Carlos Lyra) and Foi a noite (Tom Jobim and Newton Mendonça), considered to be one of the forerunners of bossa nova. At this time she and Candinho presented the program Música e romance broadcast by TV Rio, in which the couple received guests such as Dolores Duran, Tom Jobim, Johnny Alf, Garoto and Billy Blanco, to sing and chat with them. In 1957, she released her first album Carícia, which included Chove lá fora (Tito Madi), Se todos fossem iguais a você (Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes) and Canção da volta (Ismael Neto and Antonio Maria), among others. In 1958, she appeared at the Hebraico Group University (Rio de Janeiro) in a show that re-united Carlos Lyra and Roberto Menescal, among other musicians, all connected with bossa nova. The following year, she recorded the album Silvia which contained the outstanding track Estrada do sol (Tom Jobim and Dolores Duran) and Mágoa (Tito Madi). In 1959 she also released the album Amor de gente moça, with the Tom Jobim songs Só em teus braços, A felicidade (with Vinicius de Moraes), Sem você (with Vinicius de Moraes) and O que tinha de ser (with Vinicius de Moraes).
