Took awhile to grow on me, (read: get over the extreme violence and intensity) but this is easily the best swans album and a great album in general.

The cover seems to be a statement of purpose. Don't know about you guys, but for me Swans have never been all that head-bang-inducing (save for a few tracks). Much more often, I wanted to clench my teeth and just hide somewhere. It's teeth-clenching music through and through.

A shapeless mass of bass and drums that absolutely pummels your ears with only Mike Gira's growls and yells piercing the concrete slab of sound . A true masterpiece, and Swans at their best .

When you become totally used to this album, the brutality of it subsides and it just becomes a great rock album! In the same way The Birthday Party go from being ridiculously cacophonous to poppy the more you become used to them ...
