Calypso (4:11)

Cover of Solitude Standing

From Solitude Standing and 13 other releases

A folksy, mystical rendition about Calypso, the nymph who wanted to keep Odysseus from leaving her. He was on his way back to Ithaca from Troy, where he helped the Greeks defeat the Trojans. He was on Calypso’s island for seven years before Zeus ordered Calypso to free him. She, however, tried to take credit for allowing him to go.

My name is Calypso and I have lived alone
I live on an island and I waken to the dawn
A long time ago I watched him struggle with the sea
I knew that he was drowning and I brought him into me

And here I always thought Calypso had an entirely different beat... This is NOTHING like Harry Belefonte! May the gods strike this Homer guy blind!

This song is like the soundtrack to a dream. Soft as the wind. I have kept it near for years.

Brilliant. As a Classics teacher and fan of her other work, this is just a dream for me. I have used this track many times when teaching about Calypso

Brilliant! I love how she provides us with Calypso's point of view. I love when artists reinterpret or provide a different perspective of a famous work of art, film, song, or piece of literature.
