    The Silent Ballet: Volume 16

Volume 16 marks the completion of the fourth year of The Silent Ballet Compilation Series. Throughout the series we have discovered a lot of noteworthy acts, rekindled the flame with old favorites, and watched the development of multiple musical scenes right before our eyes. We’re just as optimistic and excited about the future as we were four years ago, and every new release makes us as giddy as ever.

This edition is a first for the series; Volume 16 is the first compilation to contain a video track. Our gratitude goes out to The Sleepy Vines, who made this possible and has perhaps opened a door that will be investigated in the future.

A big thanks goes out to all the artists and labels who made this project possible. Relevant links can be found below; any support is greatly appreciated.

Pet Slimmers of the Year - ...And The Sky Fell

From the mournful grey shadows of the English winter in early 2008, three friends sought to create something new and exciting with sounds alone. There are few words, they are not redundant.

“Come tread this grand divide, it’s time, I am the ocean and beyond, Forget me, Forgive, Forget”

Pet Slimmers of the Year return with their second EP ‘…And The Sky Fell’, a monstrous follow-up to their Lost Children debut. Retaining the heavy riffs and dynamics of the first EP, Pet Slimmer of the Year have supplemented their brand of Post-Metal with melodic breaks, dense atmospherics, and even haunting vocals on the immense closing track. A crushing and brutal collection of class songs.

    Tracklisting :
    1. Moravka
    2. The Faith Of Our Hate (Heaven’s Gate Part One)
    3. Weir
    4. …And The Sky Fell
    5. I Am The Ocean

Fans of Cult of Luna, Mouth of the Architect, Year of No Light or Pelican should find something to enjoy in this release.

Final Light - Further Than You Think

'Further Than You Think' is the second album from James Morris under his Final Light guise, following two years on from his Lost Children debut album, 'To Stop an Exploding Man...', displaying increased maturity and depth in both song writing and production.

Beautiful piano lines interspersed amongst glitched beats, layered with delicate guitar lines, subtle samples and electronic, synth-like sounds to produce an often haunting, always harmonious and graceful soundscape. A great achievement and huge progression in such short time.

    Tracklisting :
    1. The Journey
    2. Floating on a Cloud
    3. Somewhere in an Alternate Universe
    4. ...You Still Don't Understand
    5. I Know Now Why You Cry
    6. Return Journey

Fans of KASHIWA Daisuke, World's End Girlfriend, Craig Armstrong or Ludovico Einaudi should find something to enjoy in this release.

    Please forward and share!

  • Top Records of 2009..

It's the turn of the year again, already, thus it's time to select, retain and discard..This year, I've not spent as much time on the latter and as a result, have wound up with a top 100, as opposed to last year's 50, however, it has once again been a hard process, with records in the lower echelons being as pleasing as some of those in the higher ranks..Well, here goes, as usual, the top group consists of personal favourites, the second completes the top 50, the following, third grouping consists of the second 50 thus completing the 100..Each grouping is in no particular order bar that of an alphabetical nature..Enjoy!!

    Amiina - Re Minore
    Arroyo - Individuum & Massen
Bell Orchestre – As Seen Through Windows
Ben Frost - By The Throat
    Blueneck - The Fallen Host
    Celeste - Misanthrope(s)
    Dolcim - Guillotine Ride
dredg - The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion
    eaststrikewest - w o l v v e s
From Monument To Masses - On Little Known Frequencies
    Health - Get Color
Irepress - Sol Eye Sea I

I absolutely hate rating music. I hate dating it too, but rating… That’s just wrong. I mean, how can you compare the minimalist beauty of Taylor Deupree to the pounding beats of Chris Clark? What’s the scale here? Last year, in Headphone Commute’s Best of 2008, I attempted to tier my favorites into “Absolute Must“, “The Very Best“, and “The Essentials“, and even that, of course, is rating music. This year, I wanted to select my favorite releases from each category – but then I was faced with another dilemma – lumping music into genres is probably even worse than rating it! All this negativity has been clouding over me until in a bout of frustration I came out with the answer!

And so, I present you with 15 lists of 10 favorite releases unified by a unique theme in alphabetical order by artist. That’s 150 albums of the year! You will see that these entries tend to fall within similar styles anyway…

Loss of a Child - Carry Me Home

'Carry Me Home' is the 5th Loss of a Child release and is their most expansive yet, a deeply layered album with flowing and interwoven melodies; contrasting instruments supporting, offsetting, and harmonising with each other and mixed for each to be heard though not necessarily under every listening environment, and certainly not on first listen; experimental through its strict structure and detailed song writing as opposed to the freedom and improvisation of many instrumental acts.

Complex instrumentation hidden beneath simple ideas, dynamism created within the melodies in addition to volume, and the standard multi-instrumental Loss of a Child approach providing many hidden melodic passages requiring repeat listening to find and understand, but each proving that the obvious is not necessarily the best when it comes to musical depth.

There is a FLAC version of ‘Hundred Million Angels’ available for those audiophiles…
