The final track of Sufjan Stevens’ overtly religious album Seven Swans (2004), “The Transfiguration” touches upon the Biblical events leading up to the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ as described in the Gospel of Matthew (chapter 17, verses 1-12).
Utilizing a simple arrangement of strumming banjo and delicate vocal phrasing, the melody alternates between major and minor chords while developing exponentially with increasing complexity of timbre and harmonies building to a crescendo.
