We didn't sleep too late
There was a fire in the yard
All of the trees were in light
They had no faces to show

I love that people get pissed that he sings about religious ideals, if you enjoy the music it doesn't mean that you have to jump on the religious bandwagon.

@ jonpwnsu - Good point! I'd have to agree... So then the question is, is it the good kind or the bad kind (of fear)?

aren't most people religious out of fear anyway?

The song, the way I take it, is about being won over by love—just like a person's faith in Christ (1 John 4:19). God's not a bully; we're allowed to make our lives what we want them to be (Romans 1). The problem comes when we think we make all the rules too—which is why the gospel message is so offensive to us. No one wants to be owned. We like the idea of ourselves being God. The thought seems liberating, until we see what that gets us, and then you see what Sufjan or anyone means when they say that "The world is a mess."

I wish I could understand why so many people fear Christianity. The extent of fear and loathing is incredible to me.

@SOUNDARSENAL Well, seeing it in a Christian background the Lord, being the creator, just takes what's his anyway. Furthermore the bible says he sacrificed his most beloved to show us the way of love. So I think this song rather shows Sufjan's fear of god, realising that he can't run away and has to turn back, than god's stalker-ish temperament.
