Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man) (5:30)

“Fooling Yourself” is the second single released from Styx’s The Grand Illusion album.

The song was written by guitarist Tommy Shaw. Shaw has said many time in interviews that “Fooling Yourself” was originally based on Shaw’s initial perception of Styx keyboardist Dennis DeYoung — an “angry young man” who viewed the group’s successes with a wary eye and grew angry or depressed with every setback. It was only in later years, Shaw noted, that he began to see himself in the lyrics, and the song took on a more personal meaning to him.

In addition to Shaw’s driving guitar tracks during the verse and chorus, DeYoung performs two intricate synthesizer solos, the first, in the middle of the song, is performed in 7/8 time, an unusual and somewhat difficult rhythm for a pop song. The second solo, as the song fades out, is performed in 6/8 time.

@ClassicRockur...Agreed and with all the shit that went down in that Band..I mean they all finally went to court to "divorce" Dennis DeYoung from the band..I bet down thru the years everybody self-medicated..Tommy Shaw did..I know I would have!

Styx is the greatest band of all time. They wrote some of the greatest and most powerful rock tracks (sadly which are not aired on the radio too often!)

Yep, Tommy Shaw knew Dennis for about a year at that point and it was an incredibly tough time for Styx. They had Tommy but they needed a hit record. Dennis gave up his entire life for the band, he was married and had a family and he wanted to be successful. Luckily Grand Illusion was a smash hit, but then sadly for Dennis the pressures of touring constantly and being away from his family got to him too. Oh and a fun fact, when Tommy says "come on, doctor" before the Synth solo, it was a nickname he gave to Dennis because Dennis took pills all the time, and he always thought he was sick with this or that so they started calling him "The Doctor"!
