Strange Advance was a Canadian band from the 1980s whose music was a fusion of progressive rock and new wave. The band’s signature sound combined highly synthesized melody, driving rhythm, and space opera themes. Strange Advance was made up of Drew Arnott (keyboards, percussion, vocals) and Darryl Kromm (lead vocals, guitars), who met in Vancouver and founded the group in 1980. Paul Iverson would play bass in the band leading up to the second album.

Strange Advance released three albums between 1982 and 1988. The first, Worlds Away, brought the band’s biggest hit singles: “Kiss in the Dark”, “She Controls Me”, and the title track “Worlds Away”, which saw modest airplay in North American markets in 1983. Their 1985 album 2WO brought them another big hit with “We Run”. Their third album The Distance Between produced the hit single “Love Becomes Electric”. In 1995, the album Worlds Away & Back featured a mix of old and new material.

Damn, these guys are really, really good. Shame they never caught on outside of Canada, though I guess better there than Guam

Have always loved Strange Advance since the day I heard "Worlds Away" in 1982. It's always been a kick in nether regions that the bottom fell out of the New Wave Market in 1987-88 and SA wouldn't go much further. They have always been part of my playlist and they always will. They are part of the fabric of my youth and the Canadian 80's.

Pretty shocking to me that there's only just over 10K plays... I'd never consider this band obscure... maybe just because I grew up in Canada.

"Home Of The Brave" has one of the most amazing guitar solos for its ending- and got completely missed by MTV and the US market (remember, U2 was just coming out of the box, and the Police ruled the airwaves). I have to give props to Scott Muni at WNEW-FM for playing "World's Away" and getting me hooked... The music is so indescribable in its excellence.

"Worlds Away," "We Run," "The Second That I Saw You" and "Love Becomes Electric" all charted in Canada.

In Canada, NOT a one-hit wonder. Outside Canada, no Top 40 exposure to have a hit. "She Controls Me" video introduced me to this band, "Kiss In The Dark" eventually became the Labatt's Blue jingle, and "Home Of The Brave" was their new wave chef d'oeuvre. Daryl Kromm is a great bassist too.
