I thought I'd write a bit about the influences behind my songwriting.
When I was in junior high school, I woke up to a clock radio. Even back then, I was notoriously bad at waking up in the morning. But one morning, the first few measures of Billy Joel
's Piano Man
started playing at some ungodly hour - and I sat bolt upright.
I was a Billy Joel freak for years. I could name the order of all his tracks on all his albums, and I knew all the lyrics by heart, too. As a piano student learning Beethoven
Sonatas and Rachmaninoff
Preludes, I'd incessantly play through my Billy Joel songbook as a way to keep me sane. I even tried playing Root Beer Rag
for a piano recital once (it didn't go very well).
Later on my influences spread. For much of high school, my favorite album was Sting
's Nothing Like The Sun
. Peppered throughout that was a lot of singing phrases from Harry Connick, Jr.
's soundtrack to When Harry Met Sally. That was some massive foreshadowing, I never really seriously considered singing.
