Here's an interesting story about this song, As a Houston Radio Personality . I grew up knowing all of the city's Soul Radio DJ's that got me trained in the business. KYOK "Soul Radio1590" was My favorite job (And I Had Many). The first artist I played doing this song was Jackie Wilson in 1968. Jackies version was a slow beautiful ballad released as a single 45 on Brunswick Records. It was weeks later Tamla/Motown released Stevie Wonder's version you are listening to now!! Stevie took this to #2 on the R&B/Soul Charts in 1969 & Jackie Wilsons ballad was all but forgotten. It never charted. I'm not sure if it's even on a Jackie Wison CD. I've got his Box Set "Mr. Excitement"...Let Me look....Well I just found Jackie's "For Once In My Life". It's on Disc #3. Haven't played it since KYOK in '68! "I Heard It through the Grapevine' by Marvin Gaye held #1 keeping Stevie out of 1st place with "For Once in My Life" in '69.
