There are two known artists with the name Steve Hunter

1) Steve Hunter is the guitarist who is most known for collaborating with Lou Reed and Alice Cooper. The first hit album he did guitar riffs on was Detroit of Mitch Ryder which came out in 1971. During the time that David Bowie and Lou Reed were getting their inspirtation from the rich culture of Berlin, Lou Reed brought out an album by the same name. This is the first album where the infamous guitar duels between Steve and Dick Wagner appear on. The follow up is another classic Lou Reed album, namely Rock ‘n Roll Animal.

When the Alice Cooper band split up in 1975, Dick Wagner who already worked with Alice before called in the help of fellow mate Steve Hunter, John Prakash and Penti Glan to form the band for his solo project ‘Welcome To My Nightmare’. This album was the most succesful solo effort of Alice Cooper. The stage show and the guitar duels of Steve and Dick became part of rock ‘n roll history. The follow-up album in which Steve Hunter did a lot of guitar work too, ‘Alice Cooper Goes To Hell’ was received less well. It did had the hit songs ‘I Never Cry’ and ‘Go To Hell’.

A year later Steve brought out his first solo album called ‘Swept Away’. It contains one of the few songs ‘Goin’Down’ that features Steve singing on a track. Most of his solo efforts songs are musical and without vocals. The follow up album ‘The Deacon’ contains the song ‘Ghost Riders’ which is probably the best known song of his solo career. After his solo albums he also did guitar work on songs by Aerosmith, David Lee Roth and Bette Midler.

Thanks for sharing the e-mail exchange, really great. I've heard Steve has written 3 songs with Dick Wagner and Alice Cooper for Alice's sequel to Welcome To My Nightmare. Really looking forward to that!

I've looked high and low for video footage from the Rock n Roll Animal concert tour. I've never heard anything like this amazing group of musicians. There chemistry was unprecedented. I have an email exchange from Dick Wagner - about this tour - that is priceless. http://www.masterwebcrafters.com/RocknRollAnimal.aspx

THE best guitar riff ever is Steve Hunter's on Rock 'n' Roll Animal, 10 minutes in to "Heroin". After 35 years it still makes my spine tingle! If I could only listen to 4 guitarists they would be Jimi Hendrix, Duane Allman, Alvin Lee & Steve Hunter.
