Stereolab are a UK-based band whose style, mixing 1950s-1960s pop and music with the “motorik” beat of , was one of the first to which the term “” was applied. They are noted for the use of vintage keyboard instruments like Moog synthesizers and Vox and Farfisa organs. Stereolab is also notable for founding their own record label, Duophonic Records, with a grant from UK charity The Prince’s Trust. The band is often referred to as “The Groop” by their fans (and in the title of their song “The Groop Play Chord X” on the album Space Age Batchelor Pad Music).

They were founded in 1990 by songwriters Tim Gane (guitar, keyboards), formerly of the band McCarthy, and Laetitia Sadier (sometimes credited as Seaya Sadier; vocals, keyboards, trombone, guitar), who is from and sings in both English and French.

Over the years, Gane and Sadier have enlisted a large number of other musicians to accompany them on stage and on record. The initial line-up featured Martin Kean, formerly of The Chills, on bass, and Joe Dilworth (from their Too Pure label-mates Th’ Faith Healers) on drums, with Russell Yates (of Moose) and Mick Conroy (ex-Modern English) also appearing at early live shows. In 1993 they recruited Andy Ramsay (drums), who has remained in the group line-up ever since, and Mary Hansen (vocals, guitar, keyboards, percussion). Hansen’s distinctive backing vocals became an important aspect of the Stereolab sound, and she remained a regular feature of the line-up until her death in a cycling accident on December 9, 2002.

    v I kinda agree though I prefer to think of it more as the other albums being somewhat underrated. I could probably pick 5 or 6 albums that I could honestly say, at that moment, happened to be my favorite by them. And I haven't even heard them all yet... a thoroughly stupid ratio of hearted tracks to unhearted tracks, that's for sure.

    I think ETK is pretty overrated by Stereolab standards. Transient Random-Noise, Mars Audiac, Refried Ectoplasm, Dots & Loops, Cobra and Phases are all better

    you could just call it experimental rock and call it a day. post-rock is meaningless, the experimental bands operating in the 90s were just the latest wave of post-punk and seemed particularly interested in merging the techniques employed by the first wave of experimental rock in the 60s/70s with the technology of the time (sampling, multitrack, digital EQing).

    Yeah, post-rock was a useful term for Stereolab in 90's, but now in modern times I think it's clear that the word "post-rock" has evolved to more specifically refer to a dronier sound... bands like Godspeed and Explosions in the Sky and the like. Stereolab is more accurately a unique blend of experimental pop, French disco, and Krautrock. There's hints of post-rock and shoegaze in their stuff, but not enough that it's important to mention when talking about them in general.

    RYM pasta: Post-Rock is a term popularized by music critic Simon Reynolds. In Reynolds' words, it refers to "using rock instrumentation for non-rock purposes, using guitars as facilitators of timbre and textures rather than riffs and power chords." A succinct description of the genre's sound is difficult because of the diverse influences bands in the Post-Rock scene employ, but one can generally say that it derives primarily from a mix of Ambient, Space Rock, Experimental Rock, Krautrock, and styles on the "wall-of-sound" end of the Alternative Rock spectrum, such as Shoegaze. Some Post-Rock bands also dabble in Math Rock, Tape Music, Minimalism, and various forms of Jazz, but application of these styles is by no means uniform.
