Wellington-based Irishman Stephen Roy Hill is a purveyor of understated folk-pop. His subtle melodies and quirky lyrics combine to leave the listener feeling strangely satisfied. Things are never as simple as they seem and his songs are filled with twists and unexpected lyrical turns.

“I’ve always tried to imitate my musical heros like Tom Waits, Steve Earle & Nick Cave - their attitude and brute force - but have consistently failed”, explains the self-effacing Irishman, “but they inspire me to write about the world around me and capture it in my own way”.

Social commentary and cultural diatribes are woven into tales of lost love, old flames and nights on the town. “It’s the little details that makes songs come alive” explains Stephen, “A dog barking in distance, hail-stones pinging off your shoes, shivering at the bus-stop, waiting.”

Stephen’s debut album, “Public Transport”, was released in Ireland in 2006. It went largely under the radar, but picked up a small but vocal following, including former Radio 1 DJ John Kelly, who found the album in his jacket pocket on his way to the studio and ending up playing a few tracks on his show. A single “Conspiracy” was released and received airplay on many stations, including Beat FM, Anna Livia and Raidio Na Life.
