Biography
Seattle, United States (1993 – present)
Stephen O’Malley (sometimes referred to as SOMA) is a producer & musician, predominantly a guitarist, from Seattle, Washington who has conceptualized and participated in numerous drone doom, death/doom, and experimental bands since 1993.
O’Malley is a founding member of several groups including Sunn O))), Burning Witch, KTL, Khanate and others. He has worked with a variety of artists including Greg Anderson, Merzbow, James Plotkin, Julian Cope, Joe Preston, Attila Csihar, Peter Rehberg aka PITA, Lee Dorrian, Kristoffer Rygg, Aaron Turner, Oren Ambarchi, Alexander Tucker, and percussionist Z’EV.
O’Malley also worked with the French choreographer and theater director Gisèle Vienne, American sculptor Banks Violette, the Italian performance artist Nico Vascellari and the Belgian film maker Alexis Destoop.
He is also an art director, having produced print design since the early 1990s for numerous musicians and bands including Earth, Burzum, Emperor, Melvins, Boris, and for commercial clients. O’Malley has also worked as a rock / metal journalist & published a black metal fanzine called Descent in the mid-nineties. He was involved with creation of both the Southern Lord label and the experimental / neofolk / black metal label The Ajna Offensive.
Although he is originally from Seattle, O’Malley’s website indicates that he lives in Paris, France.
