Stephanie Mills first came to fame as “the little girl with the big voice” as the star of the hit Broadway play, The Wiz, an adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s classic book, The Wizard Of Oz. She had many R&B hits such as “I Have Learned to Respect the Power of Love,” “I Feel Good All Over,” “(You’re Puttin’) A Rush On Me,” “Something in the Way (You Make Me Feel)” and “Home” along with one certified million selling single, “Never Knew Love Like This Before.” In addition, she also had five gold albums: Whatcha Gonna Do With My Lovin’, Sweet Sensation, Stephanie, If I Were Your Woman and Home.

Born on March 22, 1957 in Brooklyn, NY, Mills honed her rich vocals singing gospel music at Brooklyn’s Cornerstone Baptist Church as a small child. At age 9, she began appearing in the Broadway play Maggie Flynn. She was presented with first prize after winning “The Amateur Hour” talent contest six weeks straight at New York’s famed Apollo Theater when she was nine. That success led to her being chosen as the opening act for The Isley Brothers, eventually becoming good friends with lead singer Ronald Isley. Many years later, Isley would manage and later marry singer/songwriter Angela Winbush, who co-wrote one of her number one R&B hits. Mills’ debut album, Movin’ In The Right Direction was recorded for ABC Records in 1974. A year later, she won the role of Dorothy in The Wiz. Her rendition of the beautiful ballad “Home” was a showstopper, mesmerizing audiences nightly for a number of years.

I've loved Stephanie Mills ever since I first heard her in the 80's when I bought my first album by her. I have always thought she is one of the greatest R&B female singers ever. A true Diva.

i was so overcome with love for stephanie mills' debut album in that last post i completely forgot about the gems she gave us years later. her career resurgence began in 1986 when "i have learned to respect the power of love" went #1 r&b. that was her first collabo with the incredible songwriter/producer angela winbush. these two were dynamic together and produced another banger in 1989's somethin' in the way you make me feel. in between though, ms. mills ensured her stamp on mid 80's r&b with the 1987 #1 ballad i feel good all over. no matter how you arrange it, just know that stephanie mills is forever an r&b diva!

man oh man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you all can't imagine the spell stephanie mills' first album put on a 7 year old me in 1979 every time moms would play it on the stereo lol. that first stephanie mills album probably has as much to do with my same sex attraction as anything dad did or didn't do lol! moms was luxuriating back in 1979-80 when dad joined the army and left her, my sister & i to love each other in the absence of his violence. but....i digress. we knew 30 years ago stephanie had a magical voice...and though her musical descendants are plentiful and sometimes even adequate, i always return to the original...this young lady with her r&b/dance sensibility of so long ago. what you gonna do with my loving, deeper, put your body in it, you and i, and starlight ensured that this was an album of amazing longevity. mom made sure that first album was always included when she played records for the next 5 years lol. we still cherish stephanie mills all these years later <3
