From A Decade Of Steely Dan and 27 other releases

This song was written about Friday, September 24, 1869 as it is known as “Black Friday”. According to the Black Friday Songfacts , it is known as “Black Friday” in the US because of a failed ploy that left many wealthy investors broke. The investors tried to corner the market on gold, buying as much of it as they could and driving up the price, but when the government found out, they released $4 million worth of gold into the market, driving down the price and clobbering the investors.

When black Friday comes, I'll stand down by the door
And catch the gray men when they dive from the fourteenth floor
When black Friday comes, I'll collect everything I'm owed
And before my friends find out I'll be on the road

Go find the version of this song on Steely Dan's album with Marian McPartland. It's so awesome that McPartland spontaneously shouts "That was cool!" at the end.

I just love the defiant 'hey, screw you' attitude this song exudes. Good quitting your job and storming out of the office kind of music to be playing in the background...not that I could ever do that. Need to pay for this internet shit. We can all fantasize though. lol

Yeap, that's it! Superb. Always love Donald's voice. And the lyrics. And Walter's guitar solo.

Drummer Jeff Porcaro, who was only nineteen years old when he recorded Katy Lied, has said, "That guitar solo [on Black Friday] is Walter on an old Fender Mustang guitar with rusty strings, That's a bad-ass solo, man."

Unfortunately, Jeff Baxter does not tear it up in this song because he was no longer with the band.
