About this album

Pioneering pop/jazz band Steely Dan, formed by Donald Fagen and Walter Becker in the early 70’s, had already secured five U.S Top 40 albums before the release of Aja in 1977 . Aja, however, was to prove to be the biggest selling album of Steely Dan’s illustrious career, reaching Number 3 in the U.S. Billboard chart, spending a year in the Top 40 there and also reaching number 5 in the U.K. Aja was the first British Top 10 hit for Steely Dan and was also the first album by Becker and Fagen as a duo. Becker and Fagen, renowned for their relentless perfectionism in the recording studio, recall the history of an album that was a year in the making, but rewarded by a prestigious Grammy Award and three major hit singles, Peg, Deacon Blues and Josie. Michael McDonald, later of the Doobie Brothers, who did guest backing vocals on Aja, British musician the late Ian Dury, record producer Gary Katz, and the legendary session musicians who worked on Aja, also contribute to this fascinating documentary. Steely Dan’s Aja has proved to be one of the most outstanding jazz-rock albums in the history of popular music.

Steely as a whole and Aja in particular really spoke to LA music. Irony for me is I moved to NYC in Nov 76 just before Aja came out.

I remember Ian Dury describing "Aja" as a West Coast album made by these dudes from the East Coast - I think that's right, it makes you think about California sunshine, y'know? And @ McLovinSpoonful: Yeah, man! I heard that, during the 1970s (and beyond), Hi-Fi shops would always have a copy ready to put on the turntable to show their customers the merits of their merchandise!

Outstanding classic. I'd live inside the Aja album, if I could.

I remember buying the album and tape when it came out, I still love it today. Side note: To bad we don't have Peach's Records anymore. A great store to buy albums.

I'm definitely not a 'classic rock'-ist, but this is one of the best albums I've ever heard. I just love how its so complicated and clever, but not for a second is it ever in-your-face about it.

why isn't deacon blues in the system? Do I need to be sad? I love all of these songs but Deacon Blues is really my favorite. Absolutely near & dear to my heart. I do love the concept of being lauded for losing. As a happy-go-lucky non-competitive, I love the conceptual imagery of the "they've got a name for the winners in the world, I want a name when I lose" line. While I don't subscribe to the next part, it is always comforting to listen to when things aren't going ideally.

Could it be that I have finally found my home at last???? Great track! I see that allot of folks tend to like the songs that are played on the radio over and over again .. Don't get me wrong I like them as well but there are so many Steely Dan songs that just get overlooked.... Viva La Steely Dan!!
