Launched onto the world drum & bass scene in the mid-2000s, both the Kiwi duo State of Mind (Patrick Hawkins and Stu Maxwell) and the Hungarian producer Chris SU (Krisztián Kovács) are interested in making a deeper, darker, more psychedelic breed of drum & bass. State of Mind collaborated with Chris SU’s fellow Hungarian drum & bass producer, SKC in 2005 on Hostile Recordings Hostile009 Space Pigz/Chicago, and in 2007 Chris SU collaborated with the epic NZ producers Concord Dawn, remixed State of Mind’s heroically psychedelic Sunking (Sunking (Chris.SU Remix)) and produced the first true collaboration with State of Mind, Deeper.

This was released on Total Science’s Advanced label (ADVR025) along with a B-side by Chris SU’s continental collaboration Tactile. Deeper provides a characteristic snapshot of the styles of both sets of producers at that point in time, a delicate blend of State of Mind’s Sci-Fi influenced sound with the robust beats and industrial edge of Chris SU’s solo productions. The track also samples the voice of an actress in a well-known science fiction TV programme of the era.

In 2008, State of Mind and Chris SU collaborated to produce no other than the second release from State of Mind’s newly created record label (SOM Music), Hoodoo/Flawless, which has a darker, more neurofunk feel, but retains many idiosyncrasies from both sets of collaborators.
Flawless went on to feature on State of Mind’s landmark Faster Than Light EP, being remixed by Sigma and getting international attention.

Since then, both State of Mind and Chris SU have continued to work with a set of producers with similar interests and styles- Phace, Concord Dawn, Black Sun Empire to name a few.
