Stars of Track and Field is a three-piece band from Portland, Oregon, currently on Wind-Up Records. Their name is in reference to the Belle and Sebastian song of the same name. The band’s latest album, titled A Time For Lions, was released September 1, 2009.

When Stars of Track and Field found themselves without a bassist a couple of years ago, the Portland, Oregon-based band didn’t follow the typical steps to find a replacement. No want-ads were placed; no attempts were made to recruit from other bands and nobody within the group switched instruments. Instead, the band opted for the path less traveled: they went digital. “Our initial motivation was two fold; a chance to stretch our boundaries and break from the conventional rock format, and avoid the frustration of rehearsing bass player after bass player,” says Jason Bell.

Stars of Track and Field had become an entirely different band, one that keenly opted to straddle the divide of vintage analog and cutting-edge digital, merging the best of yesterday and tomorrow into a succinct musical package. “We could finally embrace all of our influences,” says Kevin Calaba, “and add the colors of Aphex Twin and early Pink Floyd to a palette that already included the Beatles and My Bloody Valentine.” Adds Dan Orvik, “between the three of us there are many influences, the musical direction could go anywhere.”

If the anthemic rock aesthetic found on the full-length feels somewhat melancholic, then similarly bittersweet is the lyrical content. “We called the CD Centuries Before Love and War due to the fact that all the lyrics deal with maligned memory and love loss.

    bingo, Baalis, i totally agree with you. Till nowadays there´s no one like Stars of Track and Field, no hype band can mix musical elements like these gays did in only two releases. I, personaly, love Centuries before love and war. Honest poetry with beautiful melodies.

    yeah...can't get into "A Time For Lions" either...I have tried and tried but "Centuries..." was so bloody epic that the change in direction was a little disorienting....sigh. I have a feeling that maybe live the songs take a new dimension? anyhow, I will wear out "Centuries..." and maybe give the new one another shot some time...hugely talented lads.

    This band surprised me alot, the vocalist is astonishing, especially in the chorus of Racing Lights, the song is just bleeding passion and beauty, he definitely sounds a bit like Justin Furstenfield of Blue October especially in With You another song i !!!LOOOVE!!! Can't wait for the concert in Atlanta, it's going to arguably be the highlight of my year, you think i'm joking but the highlight of my year, last year ::it might sound sad:: was the Blue October with Switchfoot concert, but it was honestly better than any sex i've had or any drug i've taken, not exagerrating one bit, matter of fact it was waaaaaay better, I just get moved by music apparently a ton and a half more than most people(if i'm leaving you out, by all means, let me know!) by music and even movies(certain ones), but though then again there's also something about Blue October that really hits me deep. Switchfoot was really great too live (i cried through virtually the whole song of Dare You to Move).
