Sponge
Biography
There are at least three artists named Sponge on last.fm:
i) Sponge is an alternative/post-grunge band from Detroit, formed in 1991. All of the original members, except for drummer Jimmy Paluzzi, were a part of the hard rock band Loudhouse. Drummer-turned-vocalist Vinnie Dombroski became the frontman of Sponge after their previous band’s demise.
The band blew into the national music scene in 1994 with their debut album Rotting Piñata, which featured possibly their biggest hits in “Plowed” and “Molly”. Their highly anticipated follow up album was released in 1996. The singles “Wax Ecstatic (To Sell Angelina)” and “Have You Seen Mary” reached the top of the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart as well.
New Pop Sunday on Beyond Records was a departure from the grittier sound of the first two albums, featuring songs that were unmistakably pop rock in nature. The band’s popularity waned sharply during this period. The only single “Live Here Without You” was nominated for the Outstanding National Single award by the Detroit Music Awards in 2000.
Sponge continued their career with For All the Drugs in the World on Idol Records in 2003. Co-founding member and main co-songwriter Joey Mazzola left the band afterwards. The Man was released through traditional channels on Idol Records in 2005, followed by Galore Galore in 2007.
In 2010, former Sponge producer Tim Patalan (whom worked on the band’s first three albums) became the new bassist. Destroy the Boy EP was released in 2010.
