  • Scion Rock Fest -- Pomona, CA -- May 17, 2014

    19 May 2014, 10:16 by treghet

Sat 17 May – Scion Rock Fest 2014

It was a surprise to everyone when it was announced that Scion Rock Fest would be returning to Pomona. This year’s lineup was a strong contrast to the 2011 one, focusing heavily on the doom, stoner, and psychedelic genres instead of extreme metal, however it still brought a number of rare performances to the area. As enjoyable as 2011’s fest was, it did not come without problems. The festival that year was a zoo; the will call line was insanely long and venues were reaching capacity quickly, causing many people to miss the bands they came to see. Thankfully Scion had worked out the problems this time around. It seemed like they allowed much fewer people to RSVP, which would explain why the list filled up in less than 24 hours as compared to nearly three days for the 2011 festival.

The venue set up this year was a bit different from 2011. Instead of having two big tents for the smaller bands to play in they used two intimate venues, Acerogami and the Sky Fox Lounge. …
  • + BEST IN HEAVY METAL - 2012 +

    Hi folks,

The years have come and gone, and yet for some odd reason I still receive requests for my 'Best Of' journal entries in Heavy Metal, as well as several other genres. Why I still receive these requests I have no idea, but I've relented on being an e-seclusionist curmudgeon and eternally lazy long enough to post my Best in Heavy Metal of 2012 list. I hope whatever poor soul or bored last.fm troll that reads this dated meandering of metal finds something that they haven't otherwise heard or thought to listen to since '12. Unlike the previous journal entry, many if not most of the reviews here are sourced from other writers, webzines, and various publications as noted at the bottom of the review. Also, I encourage any suggestions for albums released in 2012 that I've omitted as it's painfully obvious from my list that I can't possibly listen to everything out there.

    Enjoy,

  • Two Steps Forward, One Step Back (Best of 2013 and New Year's Resolutions)

    31 Dec 2013, 21:42 by xynobia

Spurred on by a discussion of the Year in Metal with my friend Mathromancer, I'm reflecting back on the year in music. Bear with some navel gazing as I stare into the musical mixed bag that was 2013, as well as look forward to what 2014 has in store.

    Side A: An Overview

2013 was a year of tempered steel. In spite of some major discoveries in metal, a quick look at my charts reveals some bizarre backpedaling:

The year began with lots of Billy Joel during my annual S.A.D. fest. The Stranger helped me get through the winter doldrums, although it may be a long, long time before I put on 52nd Street again. I don't know how I feel about saying that "Billy Joel got me through a long winter one time", but I might as well feel honest. Thanks, Piano Man.

Speaking of creature comforts: a rekindled affair with some old favorites, nostalgia trip or spiraling upwards? Black Sabbath was my most listened-to artist of 2013 and I haven't even heard the new album. Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, and Green Day all appeared in the Top 30. …

    Sun 8 Apr – Speedwolf

Happy Easter everybody! I hope you all went to church today. I just got home from the Church of SPEED METAL. Denver speed metal outfit Speedwolf ended their lengthy tour with a show in the basement of a house here in Lawrence, but what a show it was!

The only opening band I caught was Stiff Middle Fingers from Lawrence. Out of all the local punk bands I've ever seen open shows, they were probably the best. Most of their set were covers, including 3 from the Descendents, "In My Eyes" by Minor Threat, "Where Eagles Dare" by the Misfits, and they closed with a Stiff Little Fingers cover. Really awesome stuff. Just bass, guitar, drums and a vocalist, and the crowd responded really well. It was a lot of fun!

Speedwolf was complete chaos from beginning to end. The Overlook is just a house and the bands played in a basement, but there was a good-sized crowd and they were going nuts for every single song. …
  • THE GREAT METAL INQUISITION OF 2011

    1 Jan 2012, 15:02 by DarkRadu

Late to the party, as always. This year was excellent, worthy of a place in the Metal Hall of Fame, and I'm saying that without having listened to some big names like Manilla Road, Blut Aus Nord or Sabbat. So let's take a few minutes, read what I had to say about my limited sampling of the year's delights and then completely agree with me:

    10. The Wounded Kings - In The Chapel of the Black Hand

Last year's "The Shadow over Atlantis" was probably the doom metal album of the year, and now they've returned with a new singer, one with teats! The album feels way too short, but for the duration, you've got the works: heavy riffs, haunting vocals, occult atmosphere... as Patrick Bruss from Crypticus said, they're "the band who unseated ELECTRIC WIZARD from the Dopethrone". Remember to light up the candles in 13 before pressing "Play".

    9. Ride For Revenge - Under the Eye

Now, this is how you pull off atavistic caveman fucking darkness, folks! Finnish dementia ain't nothin' to fuck with…
