There are two bands under this name:

1. Started in 1995, by Keith Ruggerio, Soviet is a electronic pop group from New York. With their debut cd “We Are Eyes, We Are Builders” they gained a lot of press and critical acclaim in the then budding Electroclash scene. After extensive touring and strained relationships, they band is on a undetermined hiatus. Keith Ruggerio now lives in Los Angeles, California. More information about Soviet is available at

2. Soviet is also a band from Dallas, Texas that was founded in 2010 by guitarist/vocalist John Spies and drummer Andrew Weir. After trying out several bassists, the duo finally stuck with Richy Brown. Their first EP, “Forever Today,” was released online in January of 2011. Available for download at

“With nods to Japandroids, the Black Lips and others of that ilk, and a boasting a flair not unlike longtime DC9 favorites Teenage Cool Kids out of Denton, the young group’s early output is an impressive one. Forever Today is an impressive collection of pop-indebted, jangly garage rock, filled with all the angst (and apathy) that you’d expect from college dropout Spies and his young collaborators.” - Pete Freedman of the Dallas Observer

out now on burger records, it's... SOVIET - WE ARE EYES, WE ARE BUILDERS (CASS) This is the cassette reissue of the excellent 80s influenced synth pop music of NYC's Soviet! Originally released in 2002, we fell in love with it again last year and here we are!!! DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY!!!!!

How can the similar artist be wrong on so many occasions. I see a direct comparison between Soviet and Alpinestars.

It's a real shame that the original version of We Are Eyes We Are Builders is out of print. Hands down, my favourite synthpop album of the '00s... Plastiq Musiq or someone should reissue it, as it's much better than the Head Records edition.

i seem to have found a rap group that raps in Spanish called Soviet. I found it by downloading everything on Skreemr with the search word 'soviet.' It's not bad.

Any synthpop-fan should give this album a shot. It's got the feeling of the good side of the eighties in its backpack while junk like Modern Talking or.... is kept out :) The poppy Run-in, the early freestyle soundalike Street thunder or the synthiehits Sensitive, Commute and breakdown are well worth the money. Unfortunately it's a hassle to catch a copy over here in Germany.

Sucks that "Modern Love" isn't on all of the versions of "We Are Eyes". Great tune.
