's-Gravenhage, Netherlands

Smutfish was a Dutch ‘country noir’ quartet from The Hague, The Netherlands, fronted by singer/songwriter, guitarist and graphic artist, Melle de Boer.

Smutfish released two full-length albums (2004’s Lawnmower Mind) and 2006’s Through a slightly open door) and one EP, entitled The Fish That Couldn’t Swim (2004).

The albums were universally praised by the music press in The Netherlands and compared to the works of Sparklehorse, Neil Young, Johnny Dowd and The Hague’s Hallo Venray

After 2006, Melle de Boer dropped the Smutfish moniker and continued under the name John Dear Mowing Club, an alt-folk band/project not unlike Smutfish, but with an ever-evolving line-up around De Boer himself.
