Kraene - Kraene
Kraene is a four member instrumental post rock band from Leipzig Germany. I know their guitarist Martin for a quite long time now and remember when our former bands had a gig together. He was doing something like grunge these days which never was my kind of music. However, our recent bands had a gig together in early 2013 and after listening to a few post metal and post rock bands during the last years I was really curious to hear his new band when I read that they are playing this kind of music.
The show took place in the narrow and dark basement of a youth center and this was just the perfect basis for them to roll out their sound carpet. They had no breaks between their songs, so the created atmosphere didn’t break down and therefore it was just catchy and I believe everybody got lost within the music. One day I read that they are recording their stuff and so I was pretty nosy if they are able to capture the feeling from their live shows.

For those of you unfamiliar, and you ought’a be fuckin ashamed, Shellac are a self described “minimalist rock trio” consisting of Todd Trainer, Bob Weston, and, most notably, Steve Albini. Albini, or course, made a name for himself in such seminal post-hardcore acts as Big Black and Rapemen, as well as by producing albums from Nirvana, Slint, and Fugazi (The last never saw daylight, but the production did in fact occur).
Over the course of their 22 year career, Shellac have released five stellar studio albums, and have promised another to be released next month. In anticipation of what is undoubtably going to be a raw, energetic bit of post-hardcore, here’s a taste of Shellac’s debut studio LP, At Action Park.
My Black Ass: Right out of the box, Shellac are crunchy and abrasive; atonal and cathartic. Weston’s thick, distorted bass drives this heavy opener with brooding intensity. …

Experimental four-piece Slint have often been cited as the fore-fathers of post-rock. Given the release of the punky, gripping Tweez, produced by the legendary Steve Albini, in 1989, I can only imagine the anticipation among hardcore fans that surrounded this album before its release. Needless to say, Slint met and, in the eyes of many, exceeded the expectations set by their debut on this seminal underground classic.
Breadcrumb Trail: The math rock masterpiece that is Spiderland opens with a soft, spoken word narrative from vocalist Brian McMahan, full of cryptic, surreal metaphors describing a run in with a carnival fortune teller. The soft, jangly guitar lead, played by David Pajo, soon descends into a thick, abrasive assault of grungey, distorted heaviness which automatically brings to mind the various contemporary acts that have drawn influence from Slint, namely La Dispute and Shellac, but not, for me, a single predecessor.
