Slick Rick (born Richard Walters on January 14, 1965 in South Wimbledon, London, England) is an East Coast rapper, known for a series of hip hop recordings during the 1980s. He was blinded by broken glass as an infant and took to wearing an eyepatch from an early age. Walters moved with his family to the Bronx in 1975.

Charlie Rock of Harlem World crew was instrumental in Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick being brought together. When Doug requested an introduction after he had seen him win local MC battle contests. It was at an MC contest at the 369 Armory on 142nd street in Harlem, given by promotion partners Ray Chandler & Charlie Rock, The Rick & Doug were formally introduced by Rock.

As a 20-year-old in the summer of 1985 he scored his first big hits, “La Di Da Di” and “The Show.” Once he gained a degree of wealth, Slick Rick also gained a reputation for regularly wearing an enormous amount of gold jewelry, including many large necklaces with giant pendants, bracelets, huge rings on each finger, and gold teeth.

any serious conversation about the origin of storytelling hip hop needs to begin with slick rick. well before his seminal 1988/1989 adventures of slick rick album, slick rick was weaving imaginative & hilarious storytelling into r&b hip hop. he and dougie fresh made 1985's the show one of hip hop's iconic tracks. few were prepared when rick quietly dropped his debut album 3 years later. the adventures of slick rick was one of 1989's most popular hip hop albums and is even more heralded today, 20 years later. Why pick a favorite from slick rick's adventures? children's story...mona lisa...the moment i feared...hey young world...teenage love...the whole damn cd is required listening for any halfway serious student of hip hop. and for those of us who jammed with it back when it was first released, happy reminiscing. slick rick and this cd are seated exclusively at hip hop's hall of fame vip table.

Along with History, Auditorium has to be the highlight on The Ecstatic. Rick the RULER! He was barely even noticeable on Cuban Linx II but I'd cream if he was on the new Madvillain. That would be A-MAY-ZING.
