Biography

There are at least three artists named Slaughter on last.fm:
1. A glam rock band from the United States popular in the 1980’s
2. A thrash/death metal band from Canada
3. A heavy metal band from France

1) Slaughter first formed in Las Vegas, NV. at the height of glam metal’s dominance over MTV and rock radio. Achieving popularity at the tail end of the movement, Slaughter’s day in the spotlight proved to be bright but fickle and brief. They have, however, continued to record and tour.

The band formed in 1988 with Mark Slaughter on vocals, Dana Strum as bassist, Tim Kelly on guitars and Blas Elias on drums. Mark Slaughter and Dana Strum had previously played together in Vinnie Vincent Invasion. Their debut album Stick It To Ya saw 3 songs hit the Billboard Hot 100: “Fly To the Angels (#19)”, “Up All Night (#27)”, and “Spend My Life (#39)”.

Unlike many of the bands from the era who were suddenly phased out in the wake of the alternative movement, Slaughter remained intact and continued to produce new records. In 1992, the released their second album, titled The Wild Life. It had the Billboard Hot 100 hit “Real Love (#69)” and was certified platinum.

The band planned to dedicate themselves to their next album. However, in 1993 guitarist Tim Kelly was arrested for charges of drug trafficking, while bassist Dana Strum had a motorcycle accident that injured his playing hand. This delayed the recording of the album, but they kept working on it while Kelly was meeting with attorneys and Strum was rehabilitating. They finished the recording on February 1994 when Strum was completely rehabilitated.

Slaughter was lumped in with glam metal but the weird thing is, the glam era died when GNR became popular, after they got popular, the other 80's metal bands ditched the aqua net hairstyles and their mothers makeup. By 1990, when Slaughter made their debut, that look was gone and most of the 80's bands were starting to become less "pop oriented", the best example would be Skid Row and Warrant. Skid Row's Subhuman Race was a huge departure from their debut album, far more aggressive, and Warrant's Ultraphobic was pretty much the same. The only difference between 80's metal and more modern metal was 80's metal bands were smart, they used pop sensibilities in order to reach a mainstream audience, which made sense since MTV was how bands got popular and MTV wouldn't bother with bands that weren't accessible to a larger audience. Death metal bands on the other hand, they were happy being mediocre and only attracting a niche fan base. But well for each their own..

That's right, all of the top pics of Slaughter are the Slaughter who deserves the band name. I will give Vegas Slaughter a chance one day, but I have a gut feeling I will not enjoy them as much as the Slaughter I know and love. Canadian Slaughter all the way! :D

The Canadian death/thrash metal Slaughter actually predates the hard rock Slaughter and technically the real Slaughter is the Canadian death/thrash band. Sorry. I have nothing against the "glam" Slaughter. They're actually pretty good, I find the death/thrash metal one to be way better. They sound more aggressive and they do slaughter and they would slaughter if their music was capable of hurting someone physically. They would be slaughtered. Trust me on this one, Vegas Slaughter fans. LOL! Canadian Slaughter deserve the name more. Perhaps Slaughter from Las Vegas, Nevada should have called themselves Vegas Slaughter. They sound way too weak to have the name Slaughter, I do know they're named after the guitarist Mark Slaughter. To anyone who is able to edit the biography, please list the Canadian Slaughter first, because they predate the Vegas Slaughter, Canadian Slaughter fans have more tenacity/passion/awesomeness than the Vegas Slaughter. Canadian Slaughter rocks, dude!!!

Canadian Slaughter is everything I want out of metal. Campy gore, Celtic Frost riffage, punk influence, sloppy musicianship, rough vocals, chainsaw guitar tone... They're perfect.

I like Strappado a lot. The vocalist sounds like one of the Black Tusk guys and the guitar tone's really slimy.
