  • Cover Me

    20 Oct 2006, 02:47 by Leviel

I've been listening to a lot of cover songs recently. It's actually very interesting to compare the different versions.

Ain’t She Sweet: I first heard this song on a 60s compilation CD – one of those cheap compilations that can’t afford the well-known Beatle songs. Of course, I really liked it. Then I heard it from my recently acquired Frank Sinatra. Turns out it was originally written by Milton Ager and Jack Yellen in 1927! The Beatles actually have two versions: the Tony Sheridan version sounds very much early 60’s, while the Lennon version is more clearly Beatles. Sinatra, of course, only has some vague idea of when he’s supposed to be singing, but it’s still swinging!

I’ve Got a Feeling: Another relatively unknown song by The Beatles. In one of the last Beck episodes, Yukio goes onstage and starts singing this song while the rest of the band is breaking up. I immediately thought, “Wow, this sounds so Beatle-like,” but was surprised to learn that it actually is one of their songs. They again have
  • THE 100 GREATEST COMMERICAL ARTISTS - VOTE!

    29 Sep 2006, 01:35 by eamezey2

I thought about somehow coming up with a list of a Channel 4 style 100 Greatest Artists. Its so hard to compile a set list of 100 artists in general to fit everyone's likings, so in the end I settled with just choosing 100 artists that most people on here will have at some point listened to or at least heard of quite a lot. There may be some artists that i've left off, but I think i've compiled a fair list of 100 commercial artists from the past 60 years or so. So, hoping that this doesn't just sink without trace, i'd like you to do the following:

Rank the following artists between 1 & 100 points. 100 being absolutely amazing, 1 being absolutely shite. But only use these such numbers if you absolutely have to. If you haven't heard of anyone just put a - . Right, lets give it a go.

    2Pac
    ABBA
    Aerosmith
    Alanis Morissette
    Annie Lennox (& Eurythmics)
    Avril Lavigne
    The Beach Boys
    The Beatles
    Bee Gees
    Billie Holliday
    Bing Crosby
    Blondie
    Blur
    Bob Dylan
    Bob Marley
    Bobby Darin
  • Dancing to the 80s?

    27 Sep 2006, 23:16 by mangoluvs

I've noticed a lot of recent dance/electronic tracks are mixes or samples of songs from the 80s.

    Eric Prydz
    - a dance version of Fading Like a Flower (truth be told, I believe this song is from the early 1990s)
    - Call On Me inspired by Valerie

    Ferry Corsten
    - Fire inspired by Serious. I especially love the remix Fire (Ferry's Flashover Mix)

    Supermode
    - Tell Me Why inspired by Small Town Boy

    Cabin Crew
    - Star To Fall uses Waiting for a Star to Fall.

    Mylo
    - In My Arms uses samples from both Waiting for a Star to Fall and Bette Davis Eyes. Great track!

    Simply Red
    - Although they had numerous hits during the 80s, their most recent disk Home features the song Sunrise. It features a sample of Say It Isn't So.

    DHT
    - remake of Listen to Your Heart

    Supernova
    - remake of Dancing with tears in your eyes

DJ Sammy has done many remakes. In fact, so many, I'm not sure I know of all of them. The biggest hit was a remake of
Heaven. I like the remake of Why.

    - Owner of a Lonely Heart
  • Oooh...a quiz...how exciting.

    1. What are you listening to right now?
    Please Please Please

    2. What song makes you sad?
Erm...I can't think of one song that just universally makes me sad all the time. But Radiohead's good to listen to when I'm sad, as is Jeff Buckley some of the time.
The Rain Song is probably the last track that actually made me cry...but I was drunk, so...

    3. What is the most annoying song in the world?
    I'm not sure.
I'm finding Razorlight pretty annoying at the moment. Just in general, like.

    4. Your all time favorite band?
    Led Zeppelin

    5. Your newly discovered band is?
Well, they're not really all that recently discovered, but I guess I'll have to say Mansun on that one. Also Cut Copy and Hot Chip.

    6. Best female voice?
Hmm...I'd have to say Kate Bush, Grace Slick out of Jefferson Airplane, or of course Janis Joplin.

    7. Best male voice?
My all time favourite is Jeff Buckley, but honourable mentions also have to go to Jack Bruce and Robert Plant.

    8. Music type you find yourself listening to most?

  • The best songs in the world... EVER!! (From "Q"!! Not 'RosaQ'... *sigh* ;) )

    3 Sep 2006, 12:50 by RosaQ

    Hello last.fm, hellooooooo...

    *booming voice* ;)

I hope all the last.fm users and readers are very well indeed!!

CURRENTLY EATING: Bourbon Creams (and I had some cake earlier. What can one say about my awful eating habits, lalalaaaaaa... )
CURRENTLY DRINKING: Nothing (have just finished Diet Coke)
CURRENTLY LISTENING TO: "Walk This Waaaay!!" by Run DMC and Aerosmith (in my head :) ) (more later... )

I hope everyone is happy with their weather right now... It's not raining here today (Wales) but yesterday... We were talking rain, wind... And New York yesterday!! We were talking tropical storm? Totally disrupting the tennis and my plans to lie in front of the TV (tsss, lazy!) and watch lots of tennis. :) (Heyy, I am okay... I feel for those people who had tickets, the players who were disrupted, etc... Shut UP, selfish me ;) )

The channels showing tennis to which I have access (is that, err, correct grammar there? ;) ) were showing vintage Agassi matches. …
  • Simply Red ponovno odlični u Puli

    1 Sep 2006, 22:18 by azra

  • Simply red live in Sofia 01.IX.2006

    1 Sep 2006, 21:44 by VelBG

Simply Red are far from being my fave band, but when I heard about them coming to the city that I live in, I decided to go to their show, since I enjoyed their more famous songs.
Upon arrival, I was quite surprised - my expectations of an audience of 2-3000 people were immensely exceeded - there were about 15 000 people, and all of them had to be checked for guns and explosives one by one, which took a looong time. By the time I got to the hall where Simply Red were to play, the supporting band (A local band called simply 'Те'(They) were singing their final song. I was kind of disappointed, but since I have the opportunity to see them live(and I already have) far more often than Simply Red, I didn't give it too much thought. The hall was packed, and there was hardly space to clap your hands - a full house indeed.
Simply Red opened the show under the continuous cheers of the audience, and I believe they were, indeed, moved by the atmosphere created by the fans. …
