Straight Lines (4:17)

Cover of Young Modern

From Young Modern and 14 other releases

“Straight Lines” is a song by Silverchair. It was released in Australia on 20 March 2007, and debuted at number one on the ARIA Singles Chart. The single was shortly followed by the release of the band’s fifth studio album Young Modern on 31 March 2007.
Unlike the songs written during Diorama where Daniel Johns wrote all the tracks himself, “Straight Lines” was co-written by The Presets’ Julian Hamilton.

On 19 February 2007, it became the band’s first Australian number one single since 1997’s “Freak”.
On 2 September 2007, “Straight Lines” was accredited Double Platinum by ARIA, representing combined digital sales and physical shipment of 140,000 singles in Australia, equalling “Tomorrow” as their best selling single. On 28 October 2007, “Straight Lines” won “Best Selling Australian Single” at the ARIA Music Awards of 2007, as well as “Single of the Year”. The song was the most played song on Australian radio in 2007. It charted at #2 on the Triple J Hottest 100 for 2007 and missed out on the Number 1 spot by only 13 votes. As of January 2008 the single has remained in the top 50 for over 40 weeks.

[1 of 2] posted 03-04-2007, "‘….SPARKS ignite in training for thought about no-one & nothing in particular / there's good will inside of me…’ This is the core of the song. Sparks are what you see when you reach an ephemeral & momentary state of Nirvana, when you have the most inspirational thought, or conversely think about something banal…but either way you transcend higher plains/realms/dimensions & you are in union with them for a brief moment in time: as sparks don’t last more than a second. For the truly enlightened ones, you see SPARKS every now & then in moments of solitude & privacy, OR they could just appear out of nowhere, much like a network of spies/angels/aliens or a combination these three: this agnostic’s new found pseudo HOLY TRINITY. The other message of the song is about expressing how Daniel wants to live The Right Life, the fair life, the ethical life. He's forsaking drugs, booze, sex with groupies...& he wants to be faithful to his wife Natalie Imbruglia.

[2 of 2] He wants to be a believer, desperate to find in life all that is good & righteous. He's obviously looking very fit & toned in the video, so he is now healthy, gotten over his growing pains & past health problems that engulfed him prior ‘…wake me up strong in the morning…’. The line: '…set me on fire in the evening…' is Daniel reaffirming his love of being a superstar on stage & performing music. The first two lines to me suggest smoking cigarettes & drugs kills & leads to no-one. Overall an inspirational COLDPLAY-esque song..."

When I first met them in Loft Berlin,on their first European tour,as their parents were setting up their instruments,it was the grunge music delivered from an australian young musicians with lots of respect.

Grunge fans seems to have difficulty to like more complex music. This is the best album of the band followed by Diorama.
