About this album
It doesn’t have any other official name than ( ), so the name of this album can be pronounced in several ways. The members of Sigur Rós usually refer to it in Icelandic as “Svigaplatan” (“The Bracket Album”). In the credits of the movie “Heima” it is referred to as “The Untitled Album”. Fans have referred to it as “Parentheses” or “Brackets”.
This album’s vocals are recorded in “Vonlenska” (“Hopelandic”), which consists of meaningless syllables and resembles scat singing. The “language” is named after Von, the first song that featured it. Most of the syllable-strings sung by vocalist Jón Þór Birgisson are repeated many times throughout each song, and often throughout the whole album.
All tracks are officially untitled; the other names are the working titles the band members use to refer to the tracks.
Untitled #1 (a.k.a. “Vaka”) “Vaka” is the name of Orri’s daughter.
Untitled #2 (a.k.a. “Fyrsta”) “Fyrsta” means “The First” or the “First Song”.
Untitled #3 (a.k.a. “Samskeyti”) “Samskeyti” means “Attachment”.
Untitled #4 (a.k.a. “Njósnavélin”) “Njósnavélin” means “The Spy Machine” but is known as “The Nothing Song”.
Untitled #5 (a.k.a. “Álafoss”) “Álafoss” is the location of the band’s studio.
Untitled #6 (a.k.a. “E-Bow”) Georg uses an e-bow on his bass in this song.
Untitled #7 (a.k.a. “Dauðalagið”) “Dauðalagið” means “The Death Song”.
Untitled #8 (a.k.a. “Popplagið”) “Popplagið” means “The Pop Song”

It took me a long, long, long time, but after repetitive listens and absorptions, I figured it out. This is their best work. Music doesn't make me cry, as a rule, and this album makes me well up every time. It's perfection, snowy meadows in the middle of winter, a frozen stream. Untouched. There's nothing like this album.
