The band has a controversial start, as the 3 were the last remaining touring members of the Mae Shi set to perform at Pitchfork Festival 2009 they announced the demise of the Mae Shi and they would continue to perform as Signals, just them three.

The played publicly for the first time as Signals for Pitchfork festival 2009, where they also played as the Mae Shi for the last time.

3) Signals was formed by Chris Gowers (Karina ESP, Trome Records) and Phil Julian (Cheapmachines, Authorised Version) during summer 2004, initially to work on a collaborative performance for the 2004 London Headphone Festival. Following a few more live collaborations Mark Beazley of Rothko joined Signals in November 2005 cementing the core line-up.
