Sierra Maestra are a Cuban band started in 1976. They sought to revive 1920’s classic son, which came from the mountain range on the east of Cuba, after which the band was named.

Their members included Juan de Marcos Gonzalez, before he left to join the Afro-Cuban All Stars and Jesus Alemany, who formed Cubanisimo. The band is still together.

sierra maestra is cubas oriente, the south-eastern mountain region where the musical style of SON cubano was born over 100 years ago, and this is the music this group is playing in a modernized style, but it's NOT salsa. son is a melt of spanish canción and (west)-african rhythm. SALSA developed in the 60s and 70s by cuban and puerto rican people in new york city. salsa means sauce, and in fact, son cubano was one of its ingredients, others are jazz, swing, rock, R&B. salsa is not as soft as themore traditional music of sierra maestra.
