Shaw is the quintessential self-produced art pop musician, a do-it-yourself soundchemist living in a musical a methlab— anyone who has worked with Shaw has stories to relate of tangled wires, late-night breakthroughs and the subtle talents that make Shaw a master of limited resources and gas-money budgets. After producing a string of bands in his basement, Shaw set about conceiving an album of his own. He locked the sliding glass door and turned the blinds to hide from the neighbors, not giving in to the temptation to rest until a perfect brainchild lay whole and conscious before him, with wolf-white teeth and a heart-machine pumping blood in rhythmic dances. Pretending We’re Not Animals, a coy nod to modern man’s schizophrenic self-image, was born.
