Shalini was formed in 2000 by singer-songwriter Shalini Chatterjee, who fronts the band as guitarist and lead vocalist. She founded the group in North Carolina with producer Mitch Easter (her then-boyfriend), and drummer Eric Marshall (who had previously been in Easter's band Let's Active).
With Easter as guitarist, as well as producer, the band Shalini released the albums We Want Jelly Donuts (2000), Metal Corner (2004), and The Surface and the Shine (2007).
Shalini Chatterjee and Mitch Easter, who were married in 2003, dissolved their relationship prior to the release of Shalini's 2010 album Magnetic North, which was produced by Easter, but on which he did not perform.
Before forming Shalini, she had previously released two singles, one EP, and an album with her band Vinyl Devotion, and had appeared as a guest artist on the first two albums by The Loud Family.
