Bridgewater, NJ (1988 – present)

The Bridgewater, NJ-based hardcore band Shades Apart formed in 1988, comprising singer/guitarist Mark V., bassist Kevin Lynch and drummer Ed Brown. After releasing their self-titled debut later that year on the Wishingwell label, the trio fell silent before resurfacing in 1992 with the Sunspot EP Dude Danger; another label change, this time to Skene, followed for the 1993 EP Neon. All members Bill Stevenson and Stephen Egerton produced Shades Apart’s next LP, 1995’s Save It, which scored a minor hit with its punked-up cover of Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love.” Following 1997’s Seeing Things, the group signed to major label Universal to issue Eyewitness two years later. In addition to positive reviews, “Stranger by the Day” was featured on the American Pie soundtrack. Sonic Boom was released in spring 2001 to mediocre reviews. It featured “Got Shot Down,” which received a considerable amount of radio play, and a re-recording of “Behind the Wheel.”

Although Shades Apart has not released an album since Sonic Boom, they continue to play live shows on occasion.

I think I ran across the Eyewitness album in my wife's collection when we were dating, and loved it so much that it was one of the first albums I bought after the divorce. I think Stranger By the Day is my favorite (and by the looks of it most of you agree), but really every single track on that album is excellent.

These guys should have gotten to The Offspring status, nationally. I'm dead serious. I finally got my hands on their early stuff and was sucked right in, just like with their album "Eyewitness". I never even knew these guys were a band in 1988! These guys were definitely one of the most underrated bands of the 90's.

This band made truly one of the best albums of the 90's with "Eyewitness". I had no doubt when I first heard it (recommended from my older brother) that this band would blow up and achieve great status due to their penchant for writing and playing really high quality rock with a catchy and artistic sensibility. It's a shame they never caught on (mostly because their follow up albums after Eyewitness lacked the same song/writing quality). But fuck it these guys should be very proud of themselves for the music they put out. I would give up everything to say I played on or wrote an album as wonderful and long lasting as Eyewitness. I listen nothing even close to that genre anymore (mostly into indie/ambient/electronic and the like) but I still pop that album in every once in a while for a good rock out and sing along.

Yeah, one of my favorite 90s bands that never made it huge like I would have hoped. Always lump them with Naked, Mighty Joe Plum, and Black Lab, cause of that.
