“God Save the Queen” was the second single released by the punk rock band Sex Pistols. It was released during Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee in 1977 and reached number two in the British charts. Its lyrics, as well as the cover, were controversial at the time, and the BBC refused to play the song.

It is claimed that “God Save The Queen” out-sold the UK Number 1 record of the week (The First Cut Is the Deepest by Rod Stewart). At that time it was unimaginable that this track could have been allowed to reach Number 1. In the chart rundown on that week’s “Top of The Pops” (the weekly TV programme on the BBC that covered the charts) it was mentioned in chart rundown as a “a record by a group chosing to call themselves the Sex Pistols”.
