Sethian first saw the light of day in 1998 in the small finnish town of Savonlinna, when two old friends (Wilska and Koponen) started discussing a band, based on good solid music and songs rather than an image. The birth of Sethian was imminent when the band that they both were in at the moment, Nattvindens Gråt (Wilska as the voice and Koponen as the guitarist) broke up.Their first demo (later published on the Black Widow Records compilation ”Not Of This Earth” was made with a couple of old friends, Tuomas Holopainen from NG and Nightwish, and Sami Karttunen (later the drummer of Disco).

The guys were also a part of the heavy metal band Wizzard at the same moment, releasing two albums and touring (and partying) heavily. After Wizzard faded out, time had come to put in another gear. The line up had in the past years had grown with Jalasmäki (then bassplayer) and Kautonen (guitar).
The Dream Domain promo was recorded in the end of 2001 with Karttunen and Holopainen in the studio, and with some help from another old friend, Mr. Kärkkäinen on additional keyboards. Before the studio, as they still had no permanent drummer, the band finally got the brainstorm to ask their old friend Jukka Nevalainen of Nightwish to join them. He answered with a loud ”YES” instantly and the recordings for our debut Into the Silence could begin. The album was recorded at the legendary SundiCoop Studios in Savonlinna by Tuomo Valtonen and later mixed at Finnvox in Helsinki by Mr. Mikko Karmila. All the keys were still played by Mr. Holopainen. The album itself was released in the year of 2003.

Just found them, and just bought the record... Truly awesome stuff, and yet another "All Star" band that will never pull out another album (Just like For My Pain, ie.)

Cool album... this music its pretty cool, pretty addictive... The vocals are kinda simple... and theres some songs with a poor vocal mixing... but its cool on overall ! If you're searching for very cool guitar riffs ambience's keyboards and very harmonic melodies, you found the right band !

Great album. Such a bad shame that some poor bands are spamming with bad albums and some bands, like Sethian, make just one masterpiece and disappear after.

The bottom line is, Sethian's music is a unique style of metal and therefore unclassifiable, though the intro of "Blood Calling" had me thinking of prog/power metal. They're not your typical "happy" European power metal (melodic speed metal), however, I think that some songs from Angels Fall First have a somewhat similar sound. I might settle for melodic power metal, which is what I use for bands that are neither quite traditional/American and melodic/European power metal. But what really matters is that Sethian is a side project that is little known even among Nightwish fans, notwithstanding the fact that Jukka and Tapio are no unknowns in the metal world. But as side projects go, especially when the main band's popularity goes through the roof, this one, too, is sadly neglected. It's a shame, but what can you do?

Жаль, что у них всего-лишь один альбом.

They're not THAT unknown, thanks to Jukka and Tapio Wilska ;) They really should make another album... I'm waiting.

Melodic metal... too melodic for gothic, too gothic for prog/power... Its bad that they are not going to do another album.. I mean I dont know maybe they will but it seems unlikely... they are very unknown band really...

Yeah, I agree with FlorianBlaschke. It's neither Progressive Metal nor Gothic Metal IMO. I think Melodic Metal is a good description, isn't it?

I like Sethian, but I wouldn't call this progressive metal, it's too straightforward for that. Apart from the somewhat slower (not so breakneck) speed, somewhat untypical vocals and lyrics, slightly untypically large role of keyboard, the music has got the melodic guitar solos and sing-along choruses of power metal. So I'd rather consider Sethian a representant of that genre, even if not a very typical one. (Take Sinergy, whose music also has a rather dark mood and still fits the mould.) Certainly not gothic metal.

Wow, I really started to love this band ♥ But I don't understand why there aren't more listeners out there :-/ I am kinda surprised because they rock. I hope they'll make another album soon :)

    IMHO it's simply dark metal.
