From Remnants

Lore Finding is the eighth track on Self Diagnosis’ 2007 album Remnants.

The album version of the song is entirely performed on acoustic guitar by Joe Watson, with drummer and lyricist Dan Kempster on vocals. Written by Kempster, the lyrics deal with the circumstances of a difficult relationship break-up he was going through at the time, and his (mostly futile) attempts to put the past behind him. The song has been performed at every one of the band’s live performances, often as the centre-piece of an acoustic set sandwiched between two electric sets.

Lore Finding is one of only two tracks on Remnants not originally intended for inclusion on the failed rock opera The Archive (the other being the band’s cover of Edvard Grieg’s Hall Of The Mountain King. The composition and recording of the track were the result of an extra twenty minutes left over from the recording sessions for Remnants. Kempster, having written the lyrics in his own time away from the sessions, recalled them from memory while Watson tested riffs on acoustic guitar. When the vocals and guitar clicked, the pair recorded the song immediately, with Kempster assuming vocal duties. The pair were so happy with the resulting song, they decided to include it on Remnants.
