About this album
Amor Prohibido (English: Forbidden Love) is the name of an album by Latin superstar Selena. The album remains as the biggest selling Latin album of all time, being certified 20x Platinum (Latin type) by the RIAA for selling over 2 million copies. The album produced four number-one singles (one posthumous) on the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks chart, the only Spanish album by a female to achieve this feat.
Album history
Continuing the formula of previous albums, A.B. Quintanilla III teamed up with Pete Astudillo and Ricky Vela to come up with what they hoped would be a successful Selena album. Its singles (“Amor Prohibido”, “No Me Queda Más”, “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom”, and “Fotos Y Recuerdos”) became hits at radio stations in the U.S. and Mexico.
Original pressings of this album, included a mariachi like version, of the song “No Me Queda Más”. Selena would later re-record a more contemporary version, to help attract a wider audience. Pressings of the album with the re-recorded version, have a decorative red stamp in the top right corner, indicating the change.
Selena recorded a song with Latin pop group Barrio Boyzz, titled “Donde Quiera Que Estés”, prior to recording Amor Prohibido. The duet was another number one hit for Selena. This track originally appeared on the Barrio Boyzz album of the same title and is included on the 2002 reissued version of this album as a bonus track.
