Saw Sean Lennon at Cat's Cradle tonight and he was flat-out amazing. I didn't know what to expect as I hadn't seen him perform before, but I was thoroughly impressed.
He played every song from his excellent new CD, Friendly Fire, plus the best song from his first album (Mystery Juice) and one solid brand new tune (Smoke & Mirrors). Many of the songs were taken at a slightly slower tempo than the album (Lennon preemptively blamed any lethargy on the band's pre-show dinner at Crooks Corner on Franklin). They also extended some instrumental sections to draw out the set. Yuka Honda's keyboard work nicely preserved the strings and other ambiance from the album arrangements, yielding a richer sound than one normally expects from a 5-piece band.
Lennon's been criticized by some for "weak" vocals, but I thought he was powerfully effective. Dare I say, he sounds even better live than he does in his studio recordings. …

Act: Sean Lennon
Support act(s): Somesay, Martha Wainwright
Where: Melkweg, Amsterdam
It was a bit of a last minute decision to go and see Sean, but I knew I was going to regret it forever if I wouldn’t go. I arrived just before 9 and it was scary quiet. But I didn’t mind, cause I could get myself a nice spot right in front of the stage.
First support act was Somesay. Apparently a Dutch band. They weren’t too bad really. The girls voice bugged me a bit at times, but at other times it was gorgeous. Plus, the three of them played live, and their own self written song, so that’s a big plus for me!
Next was Martha Wainwright. OMG! I had NO idea she was going to support Sean! I must admit that I hadn’t heard much of her songs before, but I LOVE her brother Rufus so much, and I’ve totally fallen under the spell of Martha as well. She was fantastic! It was just her and a guitar and she explained she was going to try out some newly written songs. …
