Contrary to traditional theory, The Universe came into being in late 2005.
And lo, Scott Edgar gathered the universe together and said unto them: Verily thou art all completely tops musos. What say we play some killer tunes what i wrote.
And they gathered up their mostly timber instruments and didst play the killer tunes unto the people.
Scott Edgar (guitar, vocals)
Scott has been a member of ARIA award-winning comedy act Tripod since 1994, within which he has been writing and playing music of all shapes and sizes. The Universe represents an opportunity for Scod to showcase the less joke-ridden aspects of his songwriting. Scod grew up listening to Nat King Cole, Simon and Garfunkel and They Might be Giants. So you do the math.
Mick Meagher (double bass, vocals)
As well as being a part of the Universe, Michael Meagher plays bass with the Black Arm Band, Impressions Trio ( Ted Vining, Bob Sedergreen), contemporary free jazz ensemble Blow, the Putbacks and K fa Cool. Michael also works actively as a freelance musician.
Is an incredible drummer who still hasn't emailed me his bio so i'll paste his Myspace one:
"I was born in Melbourne in 1979, moved to the country (Daylesford) in 1984, grew up watching my dad play the drums, thanks to him got into playing and listening to a staple diet of 60's rock and roll and blues, then straight into the local brass band. Totally ruled on the bassdrum till I was promoted to drumkit. Havn't looked back since."
Doogs is in bands such as the Putbacks and Vada, and plays with the likes of Aaron Choulai and the Black Arm Band.
Past Members and Regular Guests:
Kel Wolgramm (vocals)
Kel's been singing and hanging with Scod in various ways since like the early nineties or something. Here's another Myspace Paste:
"I was born and raised in Melbourne by my singing-duo Tongan Dad and Goddess Mum. I started singing and playing piano when I was a kid and eventually got my AMusA in classical piano. I've been playing and singing and writing ever since and I regularly perform around town with my sisters Talei and Eliza, Chris Bekker, Robert Parde, Dion Hirini (all song-writing partners), Tony Kopa and Headspace; and over the years with Gary Pinto, Sam Keevers, Eric McCusker, Nichaud Fitzgibbon, Bob Valentine, Eugene Hamilton and Tripod to name a few. As well as local gigs, both original and other, I have sung with Jet (most recently on the Big Day Out tour and Make Poverty History concert), Rob Thomas, Thelma Houston, Eric Burdon, Leo Sayer, Renee Geyer, Kate Ceberano, Tina Arena, Ross Wilson, John Stevens, Bachelor Girl, RuCL, and the Countdown Spectacular, among others."
Xani Kolac (violin, vocals)
Founding Universer and violin wunderkind Xani has studied under some extraordinary musicians, including Nigel MacLean, Giya Kanchelli, Alex Pertout, Mark Levine - to name but a few. She is currently enrolled in the Impro course at the Victorian College of the Arts and is a key member of Martin Martini's Bone Palace Orchestra as well as playing in dynamic duo Fluffin' the Duck with her sister Meg. She's also touring with My Friend the Chocolate Cake, which is kind of why she's not playing with us all the time any more.
Simon Barfoot (guitar, mandolin, accordion, vocals)
Simon is a member of the amazing Blue Grassy Knoll which has taken him to all sorts of interesting places all over the world. He brought his wealth of experience to the fledgling Universe. And then he went to London. Ah love.
