I'd stick with the "chuckling into his tiki drink" thing. Rice is wholly aware of his contradictions and how actions of his past came to reflect disillusionment and inner lack of purpose of the time. To put it simply, the public has to understand that Boyd Rice today is not the same Boyd Rice that was around circa 1988. Read an interview or two with him, really funny and self-reflective, intelligent guy.

I agree with you, TripleSol, but I wouldn't characterize ol' Boyd as naive, I would characterize him as willfully set in his conception. Like most power-seekers, his search for power in line with the "natural order", and the attitude this causes him to adopt (and the "shocking" stunts it puts him into), are products of resentment towards his own powerlessness in the capitalist industrial order which neutralizes his individuality. Yet he cannot accept that the solution to this problem lies in the radical isonomist project because he has absorbed the bourgeois belief that collective liberation as a threat to his personal liberation. Thus, we have the pseudo-Nietzchean valorization of dominant identity, of power and dominance which erases the other, much like we see in deSade (but in Rice's case rather less nuanced and seemingly without recognizing his own contradictions). Or maybe the whole thing is a big fucking piss-take and Rice is chuckling into his flaming tiki drink at us.

On the other hand, preserve thy loneliness has some of the most beautiful lyrics I've heard in my life.

I haven't listened to this in a while... now that i'm listening to love love love i think this is a romantic and a bit naive way of seeing power, i'm sure Mr. Rice does not appreciate what the record industry is doing to music, or what the film industry is doing to cinema, and those two examples are manifestations of power in this case capitalist power. "Natural order" thinking tends to romanticize power and at the same time hate capitalism.

Hardly a fan of the artists involved, more like an occasional observer. But still, this collaboration is tragically underrated and incredible.
