Japan (2001 – 2004, 2011 – 2011)

Schwarz Stein is a Japanese electronic project founded by Kaya (vocals) and Hora (keyboard & synth). Following a 10 year split, the band have reunited.

Formed as Rudolf Steiner in 2001 in Japan. Signed with former MALICE MIZER’s Mana label, Midi:Nette, and became Schwarz Stein (Black Stone in broken german) in 2002. 2 Feb 2004, two weeks before the release of Artificial Hallucination, they announced their split-up. At ‘Midi:Nette presents Dis Inferno vol. III’, 15 Dec 2004, Schwarz Stein performed once more along with Moi dix Mois.

Following the dissolution of the duo, each member pursued solo projects, though they collaborated with each other often and held several revival gigs between 2011 and 2013. In March 2014 both Kaya & Hora confirmed that the band would resume activities on a permanent basis.

Hora is currently self producing his own music. He launched his solo career in 2005.

The two former members of Schwarz Stein recently reformed under the name another cell as a session band in 2006 to release a self-titled album, Another Cell, which was released in limited press in April 2006.

Kaya launched his solo career on 2006 with the release of his first single, kaleidoscope with Kalm, ex Velvet Eden, providing the music.

Schwarz Stein reformed in 2011 to release the ‘Recurrence of Hallucination’ mini CD July 20th and to play a 10 year anniversary show with the same name on July 31st 2011. Another one off show was announced for 2012.

They revived again in March of 2014, rather unexpectedly, and announced the release of a new single “GEBET.” Additionally, Kaya announced that he was also going to be in a new band named FEMME FATALE.

I thought it was quite nice, but didn't sound a lot like Schwarz Stein to me, more like one of Kaya's early solo works...

The old cds are sold out long ago. You'd have to get them second hand

Does anyone know where can I get their cds? They're not available on Hora's site (only GEBET) nor on cdjapan.

Despite loving Kaya's voice, I prefer the instrumental version of booth songs from GEBET. Rise to heaven is so ♥, but I still think the first version is better. Anyway, GEBET is a good release xD

I thought they would eventually say they're were back together (after quite a few 'one-off live reunions)., sooner than I thought though. Be interesting to hear the new single and new version of Rise To Heaven aswell. So Kaya has about 3 projects now (solo, Femme Fatale & Schwarz Stein).

Aw, I really like Hora's solo stuff! I can't say I feel the fanboy loyalty to him, since I never bothered to learn anything about him. Kaya on the other hand hasn't produced anything I've LOVED since '07 (except maybe Taboo, which I really enjoyed for whatever reason) and yet like a fool I buy it all anyway, so in his case I certainly DO feel some sort of loyalty. But for me the music is a major part of what made SS interesting. I could probably listen to the music happily without the vocals, they are just the icing on the cake.

Kaya was better when he first went solo... I think his vocals has lost doesn't feel as emotional, just as if he wants to sound "perfect". Also the quality of the songs has gone downhills. The whole gothic thing, IMO, onlt Taboo and Salome has been good. I can see what you're saying with Hora, but some of us do like him and his simplistic melodies :) There's a new Schwarz Stein live in March! sad I can't go this time T_T

i can sit and pretend that hora's solo music is interesting just because schwarz stein was good (fanboy syndrome - guy was in one awesome band, so indiscriminately adore everything else he is a part of), or just admit that his formula doesn't cut it as a solo electronic artist. his melodies are simplistic, and while his song structures work well when accompanied by a vocalist, they lack any complexity or buildup that makes electronic music interesting to listen to. this is the main problem with hora's solo work - he still composes as though kaya is there, and hasn't changed his formula one bit. on the other hand, kaya has branched out, done new things, adopted new styles and themes, and shown how versatile of an artist he is. in schwarz stein, he was boxed into a comfort zone. schwarz stein was good, but kaya has grown so much as an artist since they split. kaya is better off solo where he can do new things.

But Bandito also said on Hora's page that he thinks Hora needs Kaya... Hora doesn't need Kaya and Kaya doesn't need Hora, but Schwarz Stein were better than BOTH solo projects imo. As was another cell. But hey, they created three perfect albums together and their solo stuff is still good, so can't complain...
