Signifying Rapper (4:56)
From Smoke Some Kill
Based on the main riff to Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir”, this is played by a studio band, and not sampled. The story is a version of “
Signifying Monkey” by Rudy Ray Moore.
Director Abel Ferrara describes this as “50 million times better than “Kashmir” ever thought of being”. As it was ruled infringing on the Led Zeppelin song, Ferrara was ordered to destroy all unsold copies of Bad Lieutenant and its soundtrack, which included “Signifying Rapper”. Jimmy Page hypocritically approved the same sample for a Puff Daddy song a decade later.
One of the (perhaps two) “rock” tracks on the out of print Smoke Some Kill, third (and last) of Schoolly’s great albums.
