Fannin Street (5:05)

Cover of Anywhere I Lay My Head

From Anywhere I Lay My Head

This song is a Tom Waits cover. He made “Fannin Street,” from album Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards in 1997.

The song starts like this: “There’s a crooked street in Houston town / it’s a well-worn path I’ve traveled down / now there’s ruin in my name / I wish I’d never got off the train and I wish I’d listened to the words you said / Don’t go down to Fannin Street / you’ll be lost and never found, you can never turn around.”

There was a block of Fannin Street where you could be lost and never found. Where the old Hotel Metropole used to be. It was one of the last cheap rent-by-the-week flophouses downtown, now gone.
