(1989 – present)

SAVIOUR MACHINE was founded in California in the summer of 1989 around the nucleus of brothers Eric Clayton (vocals, lyrics) and Jeff Clayton (guitars). Supplemented by Dean Forsyth (bass) and Samuel West (drums), the Claytons recorded a few demos in the 90s, which culminated in a deal with Frontline Records and the released of their eponymous debut in 1993. The first album had strong influences from Queensrÿche and U2, and displays a highly gothic atmosphere; this combination yields an almost doomy sound, but the material is kept sophisticated with keyboards, Eric’s incredibly strong baritone vocals, (similar to Peter Murphy’s) and deep lyrics mainly focusing on the End Times as prophesied in the Bible.

aren't the similar artists listed there based on the listeners, not tags? since people who listen to saviour machine tend to listen to other christian bands too (even those that are nothing like SM), that's the reason for all of those bands up there that aren't really similar except for the lyrical theme. atleast that's how i thought last.fm worked...

"Christian" for this group not more stupid than tag "gothic metal". And who in general has told, what tags necessarily should speak about a musical direction?

@OceanSoul - That is because people will not stop using the stupid "Christian" tag. I completely agree, most of the "similar" bands here have absolutely nothing in common musically. Just goes to show how useless content-based tags are on last.fm!

Fields of the Nephilim are a gothic metal band with male vocals, but their style is still quite different.

Try the band Amos from Brazil. They have some Gothic influences, although a lot different from SM.

Yes, that is true. Does anyone know of other Gothic bands with male singers?

v I agree. Maybe only Virgin Black are the only exact "similiar" artists here.

This band is wonderful, but the "related artist" is screwed up. Crimson Moonlight?!? Really? CM is a symphonic black metal band. Living Sacrifice is thrash metal. HORDE?!? WTH, you're serious? Raw black metal? Compare "Thine Hour Has Come" to "Jesus Christ" and you'll find that NOTHING is simmilar about Horde and Saviour Machine. Just because these are all Christian bands doesn't mean they sound alike. I created a Saviour Machine station in hopes of finding simmilar artists, but it looks like I'm better off sticking to my Virgin Black station for that.... :(

saviour machine II was an awesome album. That trilogy thing was OK, but I think they bit off more than they could chew. Still, pretty epic of them to try. I still have that Live in Germany video laying around somewhere. One of my favorite live concert videos ever. lol... the discussion you all have below is goofy. Its just a band. The name of the band obviously taken from David Bowie's song title "Saviour Machine". I think the christian music industry gave them more of the christian label than what they really cared to have. I think Eric probably kinda loathed at times the expectations on his personal life the christian music industry heaved upon him.

What does everyone think of Saviour Machine's REAL "new release" - the 20th Anniversary edition of the 1990 Demo? I like it a lot. The extra guitar tracks really add something. Too bad this is being "overshadowed" by an unauthorized simultaneous release.

I've just recently got into Saviour Machine and have a lot of catching up to do. They are amazing =D But I would never buy a bootleg copy, or even listen to it after reading how "ghetto" this release is (the only word that might truly describe its inaccuracy). I'll wait until Eric completes his masterpiece, and it will be worth it.

I was so stoked to find Legend III:II appear in iTunes on the weekend and purchased it immediately, then found the post on the website saying its a fraud/illegal production. The music sounds awesome, but some tracks have a certain "demo" production feel to it - really keen on hearing what the real story behind this release is...

What is your take on the "joke article" that will be released this Friday? Will you buy it or not?
