I spent some time listening to Dead Winter Dead yesterday because my 3-year old wanted to listen to that CD "with the gargoyle on it". :)

I guess it's been about 10 years since I first got the album (my first Savatage album ever), and it still blows me away every time I hear it. Some highlights for me:

Starlight: such an epic sounding song with some truly heartless lyrics. My favourite: "And if the ground's been stained/Colours run in the rain." That sends shivers down my spine every time I hear it.

Mozart and Madness: this was the first example of classical music blended with heavy metal that I can ever recall hearing. I love the interplay between the band and the orchestra (not sure if it's a real one or not, but you get what I mean).

Christmas Eve (Sarajevo 12/24): anyone familiar with Savatage's offshoot, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, will certainly know this one, as it was also featured on Christmas Eve and Other Stories. …
