Carlos Augusto Alves Santana wurde am 20. Juli 1947 im mexikanischen Autlán de Jalisco geboren. Er spielte schon im Alter von fünf Jahren Violine. Bereits als Vierjähriger hatte Carlos Santana Geigenunterricht von seinem Vater erhalten. Er wechselt aber mit dem Aufkommen des Rock'n'Roll, zur Gitarre. Im Alter von 15 Jahren trat er in der mexikanisch/amerikanischen Grenzstadt Tijuana auf, vorwiegend in Kneipen und Bordellen zur Unterhaltung zahlungskräftiger US-Bürger. Im Jahr 1965 zog die Familie nach San Francisco. 1967 gründete Carlos Santana die Band "Santana". Der Klang der Band war eine Mischung aus latein-amerikanischen, afrikanischen und modernen Sounds. 1969 spielte "Santana" auf dem legendären Woodstock-Festival und schaffte damit den großen Durchbruch. Im gleichen Jahr erschien das erste Album mit dem Titel "Santana".
