  • In 2007, I had the opportunity to see Sandra Bernhard at the Steppenwolf Theater in Chicago. And glad I did. I saw Sandra on TV, got some of her CDs, but I wanted more. And I realized that Sandra is very really a renaissance woman that inspires--and continue to inspire--a lot of people, including me. I am starting to delve deeper in the world of performance art by the way Sandra does her dancing. Her no-holds-barred comedy can shock you as much as Howard Stern does. Her singing--although not exactly the caliber of Maureen McGovern--is still amazing. She adores parodic numbers and covers. Her backup band for her live shows was usually quaint but had a nice jazz setup--usually a bass guitar, keyboards, and drums. With this, Sandra is just a few of the celebrities who loves both the traditional and non-traditional ways of doing the performing arts. Finally, her strong ties with the LGBTQ world may also have an allusion to the re-surgence of civil unions and gay marriages right now.
